From trunk to table

Where do our raw materials, finished parts and manufacturing materials come from?

We want to be as transparent as possible in our work and would be happy to give you a detailed look behind the scenes at this point

JANUARY.

raw material wood

We obtain 100% of our wood from a local wood dealer in Leopoldshöhe. In comparison to most other trading companies, this one has specialized exclusively in solid wood and solid wood products and does not trade with industrial board materials at the same time.

We always purchase whole logs from our suppliers, which we examine and select on site. This gives us the opportunity to get trunks of the highest quality and exciting grain for you. We purchase the following types of wood:

Oak:

The oak trunks were felled in European forests with certified sustainable forestry. After they have been cut into 52mm thick planks, they are gently dried by our wood dealer in Leopoldshöhe in specially designed drying chambers and then subjected to strict quality controls. For example, attention is paid to large cracks, knots and inclusions in the wood, but also whether tensions have been released in the wood during drying. If the planks are still particularly flat and straight after drying, this is a good indication that the table tops made from them will remain very dimensionally stable over the long term.

ash:

Like the oak, the ash also comes from certified sustainable European forests. This is also dried and stored by our wood dealer himself. In the case of ash trees in particular, we like to keep an eye out for trunks that have a dark color in the core area of the trunk due to oxidation processes. This is also commonly referred to as olive ash or brown ash. While many processing companies, especially industrial ones, see these natural colorings as a defect or fault, we particularly like to process them. The coloring has no effect on the material properties and, in our opinion, creates a much more exciting and appealing grain pattern than conventional white ash (same wood species, different name).

American Black Walnut:

American walnut is the only type of wood we import from countries outside Europe. We obtain these from the same wood dealers as our oak and ash and can, on request, determine exactly in which forest and in which region this tree grew. There is also European walnut, so why not that? We've discussed this a lot internally, but there are a few good reasons not to use European walnut. Not only is European walnut significantly more expensive and difficult to obtain, it also has a slightly different coloring. For example, the sapwood of European walnut is significantly lighter. However, much more important to us than the price or visual issues was the fact that the stock of European nut trees is significantly lower than is the case in warmer climatic zones. This is due in particular to the fact that the walnut tree grows much more slowly in our climatic conditions and in our opinion it should therefore be protected and preserved rather than destroying the local stock through commercial use.

glass and steel frames

While all of our wooden frames are manufactured by us in Detmold, we have to take a closer look at the glass and steel frames. Especially with the steel frames, we have to differentiate between individual one-off and small series production and purchased parts from industrial production.

Glass:

As you've probably noticed, we love to play with the combination of wood and glass. The panes of glass used come from a glazier in Kassel, who makes them suitable for our orders. All glass panes are thermally treated VSG safety glass panes with a thickness of 10mm and 12mm. The thermal treatment creates tension in the glass structure, which hardens the glass and at the same time makes it particularly flexible. You will be surprised at what such a pane of glass can withstand! What may also be new to some: Glass is a natural material that is produced by heating natural raw materials. In almost all cases, it can be 100% recycled and is therefore one of the most sustainable materials, like wood.

Steel frames made by BERG:

Especially when developing new product designs and prototypes, it is particularly essential to be able to fall back on a good and reliable partner when it comes to metal processing. Now that we have worked with countless locksmiths and metal processing companies, we would like to give special mention to our partner BERG. The two twin brothers Micha and Holger, who are behind BERG, have enriched us with their work for some time. We can hardly imagine a better partner when it comes to quickly and reliably sourcing individual frames of the highest, consistent quality. The guys do an all-round perfect job, which is why we entrusted them with making the frames for our MELT collection, among other things.

Industrially manufactured frames:

Our industrially manufactured frames include, for example, classic U and X-shaped steel runners, as well as the frame of the SPIDER dining table. We obtain all of these frames from a dealer from the district of Gütersloh, just a few kilometers away, who produces the frames for his own brand. Especially for common designs, sizes and frame variants, we think it is legitimate and sensible to use frames from industrial production. Of course, we also make sure to work with local companies here in order to avoid long transport routes. The responsible companies that produce these frames do it in a particularly efficient, cost-effective and high-quality way. In some cases it just makes little sense to produce everything by hand and in individual pieces. This also enables us to offer you the best possible price-performance ratio.

Furniture fittings technology
and consumables

Some furniture fittings and assembly materials are installed in our furniture, albeit as reduced as possible. These include, for example, threaded inserts for mounting the frames with metric bolts, knurled screws and support rods for attaching extension plates, the transport rollers on our equipment and serving trolleys and many other small components that are necessary to produce our creative designs.

Since 2019 we have been working with a local partner from Gütersloh, who produces all the small parts we need in-house. Of course, all products made of metal have a rather bad ecological footprint, but we do our best to improve it at all points. For this reason, we have again paid attention to short transport and delivery routes to our production facility in Detmold.

Another important resource for the production of solid wood furniture are the many consumables that are used in the individual production steps. Here, too, we work every day to minimize the use of single-use products and synthetic fabrics. However, it is not possible without it. Our most important consumables include our waterproof wood glue, oils and varnishes for surface treatment, abrasives, cutting tools in the form of planer cutterblocks, circular and band saw blades, and of course packaging material for transport. We obtain the majority of these consumables from a specialist dealer in Detmold. In particular, due to the fact that we carry out the delivery ourselves, it is also possible for us to reuse the materials used to secure the goods in transit and thus avoid huge amounts of packaging waste.

transportation and logistics

The area of transport and logistics can be primarily divided into three categories. How does the product or raw material get to our specialist dealers, wholesalers and intermediaries, which routes do the products take to get to us in Detmold and how do the finished JANUFAKTUR products finally get to you?

As far as the transport and logistics of our industrial partners are concerned, we unfortunately only get very limited transparent insights into the supply chains. However, we strongly assume that many individual parts are imported from distant countries, which unfortunately does not exactly help our mission of sustainability. However, where we get a better perspective and can therefore consciously choose or exclude certain products is the origin of our processed trunks when purchasing wood. As already described in the chapter about our favorite raw material, these come almost exclusively from European forests with certified sustainable forestry. Only the American walnut is an exception there.

Since we work exclusively with suppliers and partners from our Ostwestfalen-Lippe region, all products and raw materials have extremely short delivery routes to our production site in Detmold. Here they are then processed in a resource-saving manner and after many hours and days a new JANUFAKTUR unique piece is born. Of course, this has to get to you somehow.

As far as the exact route to you is concerned, of course it depends very much on where you live. In general, however, we can tell you that although we deliver nationwide, most of our products find a new home in the cities of Düsseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg and Munich. Since we are in a geographically very central location with our Detmold location, we can reach all of these places with relatively few kilometers. With a few exceptions, we always deliver our products ourselves, which not only saves packaging material, but also gives us the opportunity to plan the individual routes optimally and as efficiently as possible.

Do you still have unanswered questions or suggestions on how we can position ourselves even more efficiently and sustainably in the future? Then please send us your feedback via our contact form. We are always happy about new ideas that help us to wake up from an inevitable operational blindness.

Transparency is good, active changes even better

In addition to transparent handling of our production and the origin of our materials and raw materials, active environmental protection is also particularly important to us.
